The repair guide
Before you retire
your favorite pair.
A practical guide to observing wear, asking useful questions, and making an informed decision about footwear repair.
1. Look beyond the bottom.
Notice where your footwear is worn. Check the visible sole surface, the edge where the sole meets the upper, and the upper itself. Make a note of loose areas or changes you have felt while wearing the pair. An observation helps describe the problem; the workshop assessment determines the options.
2. Bring the whole pair.
Even if one shoe has the obvious problem, bringing both allows a comparison of construction and wear. Tell Oltar about previous repairs and anything you want to preserve, such as the look of the edge or the feel of the original sole.
3. Ask about the proposed work.
- Which parts need attention, and what can be retained?
- Is leather or rubber replacement compatible with this pair?
- Will the finished profile or feel change?
- What is the estimate and expected collection time?
- Are there limitations you should understand before deciding?
4. Compare the value to you.
A repair decision is about more than the purchase price. Consider fit, familiarity, sentimental value, and how much you expect to use the pair. There is no universal price or rule that makes every shoe worth repairing. A clear estimate gives you something concrete to decide on.
5. Plan sole lifts individually.
If you need a custom lift, bring the intended specifications and discuss footwear compatibility. For work based on a care plan, use the measurements provided by your clinician or relevant professional. Avoid choosing a lift height from a generic online guide.
6. Ask about care for your actual material.
Leather, suede, textile, and synthetic footwear need different handling. Follow the footwear maker’s care instructions and ask about any aftercare specific to the repair. Before using a product or home treatment, confirm that it is appropriate for the material and finish.
